The Mount Elden Environmental Study Area (ESA) is a 400 acre parcel of land that was set aside by the United States Forest Service in 1968 as a study site, bird sanctuary, and for use by schools and other organizations to help teach environmental education. This means that mineral exploration, timber harvest, grazing and motorized vehicles are prohibited within the boundaries.
The boundary is marked with black and yellow metal signs. The area is fenced to protect the fragile resources from further erosion. This area provides the people of Northern Arizona with an opportunity for "hands-on" experiences in environmental awareness and education. Students and adults alike can foster an ethic of wise resource management and stewarship of the land.
