Steve C. Ehrmann, Ph. D.

Director of The Flashlight Program
and Vice President, The TLT Group

Dr. Ehrmann is well-known in the field of distance education, dating back to his years of funding innovative research and materials in this field when he served as a program officer with Annenberg/CPB (1985-96). Before that he was a program officer with The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) (1978-85) and as Director of Educational Research and Assistance at The Evergreen State College. (1975-77)

Dr. Ehrmann has spoken all over the world on hundreds of campuses, and at dozens of conferences on the uses and abuses of technology for improving education. He has written or helped to write four books and over thirty articles in this field, on subjects as varied as the economics of courseware and the future of liberal learning.

Dr. Ehrmann's Ph.D. is in management and higher education from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he also received bachelor degrees in aerospace engineering and in urban studies. He lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife Leslie.

Phillip D. Long, Ph. D.

Senior Strategist,
Academic Computing Enterprise MIT

Dr. Long is a Senior Strategist for the Academic Computing Practice at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He co-directs the Academic Computing Support Team, and provides leadership in applying MIT Information System resources to support the integration of technology into the curriculum. Dr. Long serves on the iCampus project team working to develop new technologies for teaching in partnership with Microsoft Research, and the Stellar project to develop an Open Knowledge Framework for reusable object components suitable for on-line instruction and other research and community collaborations.

Dr. Long's professional activities include serving on the 2002 Syllabus Conference Board as a past Chairperson; contributing a regular column on Technology Trends to Syllabus Magazine; and Chair of the Advisory Committee on Teaching and Learning of the NLII. Dr. Long is also a Senior Associate with the TLT Group. He serves on numerous advisory boards and professional committees including the U.S. Army Distance Learning Subcommittee, Stevens Institute of Technology WebCampus Advisory Board, and Advisory Council of the Global ICT Education Program. He has shared his knowledge and expertise at numerous conferences, invited presentations, and published works.

Dr. Long helped create The TLT Group's Student Technology Assistant Program and has been of great help in developing the Learning Space Design resources and services.
